The Little Things Matter

23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

- Colossians 3:23-24

I love the last short statement at the end of these verses. “You are serving the Lord Christ.” This is to be an encouraging reminder to his audience. If you zoom out a little and grab more context you will see that he is talking specifically to servants or bondservants and how they should obey their masters. You can imagine how disheartening and thankless that position must have been. However, he reminds them that the work they are doing is ultimately for the Lord, and that they will be rewarded for their work in the Lord. We may not be a bondservant, but we can certainly apply this principle to our lives. We have mondain, difficult, or thankless things that we have to do on a daily basis. It’s easy to dread those things or think it all amounts to nothing. That is not true if you are serving Christ.

Remember the next diaper you change, dish you wash, or load of laundry you fold and put away that you can glorify Christ with these things and that he rewards you. Remember the next time you are in a meeting, grading papers, or driving that tractor, that ultimately, “you are serving the Lord Christ.”

From Your Fellow Servant,
